Gymnastics Terms: Block

 A Block is similar to a push, but in isolation. To block, push with just your shoulders and keep your  arms straight.  

Gymnastics Terms: Extension

Extension in gymnastics is when you straighten your legs and arms as far way from your body as possible. When doing extensions, keep your feet and hands pointed.

Gymnastics Terms: Form

Good form involves the whole body. When performing tricks they should look smooth and effortless, with your body, arms and legs in control at all times. 

Gymnastics Terms: Kicking Leg

Your kicking leg is your driving leg. If you are right handed your kicking leg is your right leg. If you are left handed the left leg is your driving leg. 

Gymnastics Terms: Point and Flex

Point is where you extend your hand or your toes in a straight line.  Flex is when you bend your hands or feet at your wrists or ankles.

Gymnastics Terms: Punch

A punch is a jump with both feet together from a walk or a run.

Gymnastics Terms: Push

Push is when you move your body with your arms or legs from a bent position to a straight position. An example would be if you are doing a push up or a squat.

Gymnastics Terms: Spot

Spotting is moving your head look directly at a point. 

Spot also means having someone assist you in a trick for safety.

Gymnastics Terms: Stick

 Stick is when you land on your feet after performing a trick without taking a step. 

Gymnastics Terms: Stretch

A stretch is performed by raising your straight arms above your head before and after a trick.

Gymnastics Positions: Arch

 Arch is when you bend your back backwards at your waist.

Gymnastics Positions: Hand

There are several hand positions in gymnastics:

  • hand point
  • hands turned in
  • hands turned out
  • hand flexed at wrist
  • hand repulsion

Gymnastics Positions: Head

There are several head positions in gymnastics:

  • Neutral. Head is looking forward
  • Chin to chest. Head tilting forward to where your chin touches your chest. 
  • Head up. Head tilted back looking up.  

Gymnastics Positions: Hollow

Hollow is were you put your arms out in front of you and then push your shoulder as far forward as you can make a U shape from shoulder to shoulder. 

Gymnastics Positions: Pike

Pike position is were you keep your legs straight and bend at the waist. 

Gymnastics Positions: Prone

Prone position is were you hold your body up off the ground with just are arms and toes.  

Gymnastics Positions: Reach

Reach position is were you lift your arm above your head in the straight position. 

Gymnastics Positions: Squat

 Squat position is were you bend at the knees. Sometimes with your feet apart and sometimes with your feet together. 

Gymnastics Positions: Stances

 Stance Positions: There are several stances you will use in gymnastics. Neutral stance, straddle stance, Lunge stance, T stance, Y stance, X stance. 

Gymnastics Positions: Tuck

 Tuck position is were you bend your legs and pull your knees up to your chest with your hands just below the knees. rounding your back and making your shape like a ball.

Gymnastics Positions: Arms

 Arm positions: There are several arm positions in gymnastics. Arms by you side, T position, Y position, reach position and forward position.
